Background of the study
Creative thinking is an essential competency for problem-solving and innovation, and its cultivation begins in early childhood education. In Ilorin West Local Government Area, Kwara State, educational practitioners have increasingly recognized the need to foster creative thinking among young learners. Early childhood education settings provide a fertile ground for nurturing imagination and originality through play-based learning, interactive activities, and a curriculum that encourages exploration. Studies have shown that when children are exposed to creative learning environments, they develop enhanced cognitive flexibility and innovative problem-solving skills (Chukwu, 2023). In Ilorin West, schools are incorporating arts, music, and hands-on projects into their teaching methods to stimulate creative thought and expression.

The integration of creative thinking into early childhood curricula is supported by a growing body of research, which suggests that creativity not only improves academic outcomes but also contributes to emotional and social development (Olayinka, 2024). Educators in Ilorin West have observed that creative activities such as drawing, storytelling, and role-playing help children articulate their ideas and emotions more effectively. This approach is particularly significant in a rapidly changing global environment, where adaptability and creative problem-solving are vital for success. The emphasis on creative thinking aligns with modern educational paradigms that value critical and lateral thinking as much as traditional academic skills (Adebola, 2023).

Moreover, the cultural context of Ilorin West, with its rich traditions in arts and performance, provides a unique opportunity to integrate local cultural expressions into creative learning. By drawing on indigenous art forms and local narratives, educators can create learning experiences that resonate with the students’ cultural identities while simultaneously encouraging innovative thinking. This synergy between cultural heritage and creative education not only preserves traditional knowledge but also fosters a dynamic learning environment that prepares children for future challenges (Sulaiman, 2024). Despite these promising developments, challenges such as limited resources, insufficient teacher training, and a lack of standardized creative curricula persist. Addressing these issues is critical to fully harnessing the potential of early childhood education to enhance creative thinking in Ilorin West.

Statement of the problem
Although early childhood education in Ilorin West has made strides in promoting creative thinking, several challenges hinder its full potential. A primary issue is the inconsistency in implementing creative curricula across schools. Many educational institutions rely on conventional teaching methods that prioritize rote learning, leaving little room for activities that stimulate creativity (Babatunde, 2023). This imbalance results in underdeveloped creative skills among young learners, as they are not exposed consistently to environments that encourage exploration and innovative thinking. In addition, there is a shortage of adequately trained teachers who possess the skills and confidence to deliver creative lessons effectively. Many educators cite a lack of professional development opportunities related to creative pedagogy, which limits their ability to integrate arts and interactive learning into daily instruction (Folorunsho, 2024).

Resource constraints further exacerbate the problem. Schools often face shortages of art supplies, musical instruments, and other materials that are essential for creative activities. This lack of resources not only diminishes the quality of creative programs but also discourages both teachers and students from engaging in imaginative learning. Furthermore, there is a noticeable gap between the innovative practices observed in some progressive schools and the standard approaches adopted by the majority, resulting in uneven educational outcomes across the region (Umar, 2023). Parents and community stakeholders have also expressed concerns regarding the relevance of creative education in a system that emphasizes standardized testing and academic performance. These issues underscore the need for comprehensive strategies to integrate creative thinking into early childhood education, ensuring that all children in Ilorin West receive the benefits of a balanced, creativity-enhanced curriculum (Oyekan, 2024).
